Top Canadian athletes pull out of CWG
Headlines Today
Top Canadian athletes have pulled out of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, citing security and pollution as reasons.
Among those not coming for the Games are top hurdler Priscilla Lopes, a bronze medalist at the 2008 Olympics, 100-metre hurdle champion Perdita Felicien, 800-metre racer Gary Reed and top 10,000-metre athletes Simon Bairu, Eric Gillis and Reid Coolsaet.
Irrespective of the reasons given, the pullout could be a move by the athletes to use the Games period to prepare for other major sporting events.
The athletes have joined a growing list of other international stars not participating in the Games. These include Olympic 100 metres champion Usain Bolt, four-time Olympic champion cyclist Chris Hoy, sprinter Dwain Chambers and heptathlete Jessica Ennis.
Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown, Olympic and world champion track cyclist Victoria Pendleton of UK, European gold medallist gymnast Daniel Keating of Scotland and Australian swimmer Cate Campbell are the other topline athletes who have pulled out.
