Malaysian trio of Alex Lim, Muhamad Shafiq Ridhwa and Aaron Kong slipped from an overnight top spot (after three games) to finish 13th at the end of the qualification round, to see their hopes of the country wining the second medal dashed at the 2010 WTBA World Men's Championshjip at the Dream Bowl Palace in Munich this morning.
It was Team USA 's second trio team, who unseated Malaysia for the top spot after the end of the second series of three games played on long oil, who won the trios gold medal, the second gold medal in three events for the United States.
The Team USA 2 squad of Rhino Page, Patrick Allen and Wes Malott defeated Mexico, 650-514, in the final. They took down teammates Chris Barnes, Bill O'Neill and Tommy Jones in overtime in the semifinals.
In the final, Allen led Team USA with a 235 game, while Page shot 228 and Malott had 187.
Mexico's Ernesto Franco shot 220, Jorge Rosado had 145 and Alejandro Cruz shot 149.
Page, Allen and Malott didn't face much of a fight from the Mexico team in the championship match.
Instead, all of the drama was in the semifinal matchup between the two American teams.
After finishing regulation tied at 590, the teams went to overtime as Malott and O'Neill faced off in a ninth and 10th frame roll-off. O'Neill left a pocket 4-9 split in the 10th and Malott then stepped up to throw a strike to advance his team, 50-27.
Mexico who finished third after the qualification round took out Chinese Taipei, 607-576. Chinese Taipei had finished second after the qualification.
Besides Malaysia who fell from the top four spots after the first series of three games, Italy who were placed second, dropped to fifth spot, at the end of the six-games to miss the semifinals.
The four teams that advanced to the semifinals took part in six games of qualifying over two days.
In Wednesday's final round, Barnes, O'Neill and Jones set the three-game World Championships record with a 2,196 total, a team average of 244. The previous record of 2,121 was set by Finland in 1999.
For Malaysia, it was obvious that they had problems with the long oiled pattern and most affected was Muhamad Shafiq and had lines of 163,178 and 163 for a total of 504 as compared to his total of 660 on medium oiled pattern in the first three games.
Anchorman, Aaron too had some problems but he managed to down a total of 592 as compared to his overnight total of 647.
Veteran Alex, who won a silver in the doubles, was the only one to surpass the 600 mark with his total of 604 but still short of his 657 total in the first three games.
They could only muster a total of 1700 for the second series of three games as compared to their 1964 to gain pole position after the first series.
Malaysia's second trios team of Zulmazran Zulkifli, Muhammad Nur Aiman and Adrian Kong improved their performance from the first day to haul themselves from100th position out of 115 teams, to 54th at the end of second series of three games, but the damage for them was already done in their first series of three games.
In all-events, O'Neill increased his lead after 18 games to 4,054, an average of 225.22, with just the team event remaining. Barnes sits in second at 3,941, while Franco is third with 3,932.
Aiman who had topped the All-events after the doubles event, has dropped to 29th spot with his total of 3639 after 18 games, while Aaron has the highest standing among the Malaysians in 27th spot with his total of 3695.
The top 16 players in the all-events standings after 24 games advance to Masters match play on Saturday.
Action shifts to the coveted five-player team event, which begins with the first of two qualifying block later today. The final round will be contested tomorrow with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals.
