ACWS Day 3
Defending champion and world No 2
Japan, fired the first salvo to retain their title when they defeated
challenger China 12-0 in their Group A final match at the GBK Softball Stadium
this morning.
After a close battle which saw no
runs in the first two innings, Japan had two runs in the third, followed up by
7 in the fourth and three in the third to down China.
Japan finished top of the table A unbeaten
in four matches, while China had to settle for second spot with a loss.
While all indications are that Japan
will go on to retain the title for the fifth consecutive time and their seventh
time to win the title in 11 editions, China could get a second chance at Japan,
if they make the final.
China will also be fighting hard to
finish among top three in the competition to qualify for the World Cup Women
Softball in 2021.
But so will Chinese Taipei who look
set to clash with China in the semifinals.
Another contender for the top three
spot, Philippines, had a hiccup when they went down 6-4 to Chinese Taipei in a
closely fought battle.
Both teams started even on the first
inning with 3 runs each before Chinese Taipei when three up in the second
inning. Philippines narrowed the gap with a run in the third inning, but it was
stalemate in the next four innings for Chinese Taipei to win.
Philippines will probably have to
contend with Japan in the semi finals if they dispose of Korea tomorrow in the
single elimination round.
Indeed, an exciting end is
anticipated as teams’ battle for top three sports for the World Cup ticket and
the fourth to seventh finishing to make the cut for the Olympic qualifiers.
Japan qualify as host of Olympics.
