As expected defending champions
Japan, Chinese Taipei, China and Philippines booked their semi-final berths at
the 11th Asia Cup Women Softball championship in Jakarta.
It will now see the teams’ battle for
top three spots for the World Cup ticket, and also for a berth in the Olympic
qualifiers – with Chinese Taipei, China, Philippines Indonesia and Thailand
having qualified already finishing among the top six, leaving the sixth spot to
be battled out between Hong Kong and Korea in the seventh and eighth playing
playoff. Japan have an automatic berth as host the of 2020 Olympic Games.
Japan defeated host Indonesia 7-0 over
five innings this morning with five runs in the first inning and two in the
third, to leave the host play off in the fifth and sixth playoff against
Thailand.
Chinese Taipei dispensed off Thailand
15-0 in three innings with five runs in the first, one in the second and nine
in the third,
China who defeated Hong Kong 11-2,
have tough mouth-watering semifinal clash against Chinese Taipei.
Philippines who had to work hard to
defeat Korea 5-1 will play Japan in the other semi-finals.
Philippines had to thank their first
base hard hitter, Cassandra Decker Hailey (pix below), for giving them the break at the
score 2-1 in their favour for her home run in the 5th inning to pull
away from Korea for victory after seven innings.
Philippines and Korea were tied with
one run each in the first inning before Philippines scored their second run in
the third inning for a narrow 2-1 lead until Cassandra saved the day for them.
Indonesia will play Thailand and Hong
Kong take on Chinese Taipei tomorrow to determine who plays in the 5th-6th
placing or 7th-8th placing.
The loser in the 7th-8th
placing match will miss the cut for the Olympic qualifier.
In the 9th- 10th
placing match Singapore defeated India 16-3
