High stakes at 11th Asia Cup women championship

11th Asia Cup Women Softball championship

THE 11th Asia Cup Women Softball championship hosted by Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno's Softball Stadium starting began yesterday.
This is the fourth time Indonesia is be playing host, having hosted in 1972, 1991 and 2007. 
A total of ten teams are competing in the competition which ends on May 8.
Japan, six times winners and defending champions who had won in four times consecutive times, have been drawn in Group A together with China – three times consecutive champions in 1987, 1991 and 1995 –, Korea, India and Thailand.
In Group B are Philippines, champions in 1972 and last year’s losing finalist to Japan, four times runners-up Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, host Indonesia and Singapore.
This Asia Cup is an important tournament as it will qualify the top six Asia teams, other than Japan (host of Olympics 2020), to participate in the Asia-Oceania Olympic 2020 Qualifier to be held in Shanghai in October 2019.
 It will also serve to qualify the top three Asia teams to participate in the World Cup Women Softball 2021.
