Another missed deadline

Showpiece CWG stadium will miss deadline

Despite repeated assurances by all stakeholders of the 2010 Commonwealth Games that all venues will be ready by August 31, the most important of them all — the gymnastics venue at the IG indoor stadium near ITO  — will definitely miss the deadline. Equipment to be used by the gymnasts is
still to arrive from the Netherlands.
Officials told HT they don’t expect it to arrive before the first week of September. Competition manager G.S. Bawa confirmed the delay. HT learnt the order for the equipment was placed late by the Games organising committee (OC).
The contract has been given to Gymnova, providers of equipment to the Olympics.
Secretary general of the Gymnastics Federation of India Kan Singh Rathore was quite vocal about the problems that’s crept up because of lack of proper equipment. “It should have been here by now, as promised by the organisers. We’ve already  had to postpone our selection trials by at least a month,” he said. “We couldn’t have postpo-ned it further as we had to fina-lise the names by September 3.”
The OC finally had to borrow equipment from the Ranchi National Games organisers. “We got the equipment from there so that the test event could take place,” said Bawa.
As for testing the new equipment, the officials are clueless.
