Siti gives equal priority to Junior All-Stars championship

Siti Safiyah Amirah after having competed in higher level championships, looks out of place in the Milo International Junior All-Stars Bowling Championship currently ongoing at the Sunway Mega Lanes.

Siti who only turned 19 on Nov 14, is fresh from competing in the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup where she finished a creditable third.

Earlier in April n Naples, had won the she the World Ranking Masters title and at the beginning of the year had won the National Championship title too.

A member of the national elite squad for the last two years, Siti however, does not feel that she is out of place in this international youth championship.

“I treat this international youth championship as important as all the other senior championships I compete,” said Siti who has been competing in the Junior All-Stars championship since 2002.

“The competition in this championship is equally keen if not even more as the senior tournaments I have competed in,” said Siti who has won the Junior All-Stars twice – 2004 and 2006.

“The championship has grown in popularity over the years and we get a good field of international bowlers who are either already national a bowler of their respective countries or in the fringe to make the cut.

“I am still young and these will be the bowlers I will be up against in the senior tournaments. Competing here gives me a head start to bowl against them and gauge their standard.

“In any case, it is a difficult to win the title in this championship as it has been clearly underlined with me only winning it twice despite competing in my seventh series.”

Siti said that she is looking forward to winning the Junior All-Stars title for a third time.

“I have had a generally good year this year and nothing will be sweeter to end the year with this title,” said Siti who is currently placed eighth in the Girls Masters Open qualifiers.

Siti has till date made six attempts to get her highest score from the block of three games. Her score of 648 for her eighth place spot was achieved in her third attempt on Thursday.

“At this point, I was just want to make the cut to the Masters and then take it from there to qualify for the step-ladders,” said Siti who was not too worried about her current position.

Leading the field in the Girls’ Open is Fatin Syazliana from the Elite Backup squad with her total of 727, with national bowler, Zandra Aziela in second spot with her total of 705.

Among the highlights today was a near second perfect game of the championship when Aliff Imran from Penang in the Boys Graded qualifier fired 299. The stubborn one pin made Aliff RM1,000 (prize money daily for a perfect game) poorer.

Another point of interest was that 15-year Muhd Aizudeen Mustaqim from Selangor who is leading the field in the Boys 15 & Under category with his total of 762 has an average of 254!

It will be interesting to see if he remains consistent and how he fares at the end of the tournament.
