Malaysian soccer team in the semifinals


The Malaysian U-23 soccer team qualified for the Laos Sea Games soccer semifinals when they beat Thailand 2-1 in a crucuial final Group A match at the National Stadium this evening.

Malaysia denied Thailand their hopes of winning the Sea Games gold medal for a record ninth time by denying them a place even in the semifinals. Thailand only needed a draw to reach the last four, while Malaysia needed an outright win to reach the semifinals.

Vietnam in their final match beat Cambodia 6-1 to top Group A.

Malaysia, who finished runner-up in the Group, will now meet host Laos in the semiifnals. Laos topped Group B on better goal difference over Singapore.

Vietnam will play Singapore in the other semifinals.
